Dr. Lesoway was born in Mundare, Alberta and graduated from medical school at the University of Alberta.  After completing Internal Medicine residency training in Edmonton, Alberta, he went to London, Ontario to complete his Cardiology residency at University of Western Ontario .  Dr. Lesoway was the Director of Cardiovascular Services for the Calgary District Hospital Group from 1986 to 1996.

Dr. Prieur was born in Calgary, Alberta and attended medical school at the University of Alberta.  He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Western Ontario and his training in Cardiology and fellowship in Echocardiography at the University of Toronto.  Dr. Prieur is an attending staff Cardiologist at the Foothills and Peter Lougheed hospitals.  His clinical focus is the care of adults with congenital cardiac conditions, through the Southern Alberta Adult Congenital Heart Program at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Ma graduated from medical school at Trinity College, University of Dublin.  He received his Internal Medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and completed Cardiology training at Southwestern Medical School, University of Texas.   Dr. Ma underwent further training in Cholesterol Metabolism with Nobel Prize winners Drs. Goldstein and Brown in Dallas. He also conducts clinical research in Cardiology and Lipidology at TotalCardiology (formerly Cardiology Consultants Outpatient Clinic).

Dr. Giannoccaro is originally from Toronto, Ontario.  He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto, where he also completed his Internal Medicine residency.  He did his cardiology training at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute followed by a fellowship in Echocardiography at the Heart Institute. Most recently he developed and directs the RACC™ cardiology clinic.  Along with his clinical responsibilities, he teaches at the University of Calgary and is active in research, participating in numerous clinical trials.

Dr. Stone was born in Winnipeg Manitoba but grew up principally in Ottawa Ontario. He holds undergraduate degrees in Physical and Health Education, Biology and Medicine from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. In addition to his undergraduate training, he holds a Masters of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and a Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Physiology. He has completed Royal College clinical fellowships in both Internal Medicine and Cardiology. Dr. Stone is the Chair of the Guidelines Section for C-CHANGE (Canadian-Cardiovascular Harmonization of National Guidelines Endeavor) and is also the Founding Chairperson and Editor-in-Chief of the First, Second, and Third Editions of the CACR Canadian Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention. He is a member of numerous other national and international guidelines committees as well as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention. He is a Past President of the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation, a former Deputy Secretary General of the World Council on Cardiac Rehabilitation for the World Heart Federation, a member of the governing Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and the current Section President of Cardiology for the Alberta Medical Association. His research interests include development and implementation strategies for clinical practice guidelines, cardiovascular disease event risk stratification, the non-invasive diagnosis of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease, exercise vascular biology, cardiac conditions in athletes, and cardiovascular disease prevention and cardiac rehabilitation.

Dr. Aggarwal graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School.  He also completed his Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto.  Dr. Aggarwal practiced as a General Internist for one year before beginning his Cardiology training at the University of Calgary.  He completed his fellowship in Echocardiography at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.  Dr. Aggarwal specializes in cardiac and carotid ultrasound, cardiac rehabilitation and heart failure. He has a special interest in medical information technology.

Dr. Boyne was born in Montreal, Quebec. He completed his undergraduate Physiology degree at McGill University. He completed his Masters of Neuroscience and Medical degrees from McMaster University in Hamilton where he followed up with training in the Internal Medicine and Cardiology disciplines. He went on to complete his Nuclear Cardiology fellowship at the University of Virginia. He had previously practiced in Hamilton where he was also an Associate Professor at McMaster University. Dr. Boyne was previously the site leader for Cardiology, Rockyview General Hospital.

Dr. Banijamali obtained a MSc. in Physics and Biophysics. He completed his MD training while holding a Medical Scientist position with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and received his PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology and Cellular Imaging at the University of Calgary.  He later completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto with subsequent training in Cardiology in Calgary with a fellowship in Nuclear Cardiology.  He then received additional training in cardiac CT imaging in USA.   In addition to adult clinical cardiology, his expertise include heart failure education and management in the hospital and community settings, as well as non-invasive cardiac risk stratification and outcome assessment with emphasis on multimodality imaging. He has a strong academic interest in clinical and basic science education and is especially involved in advancing the concept of standardization and appropriate utilization of cardiac testing/imaging used in risk assessment.  He is involved in the design, implementation and promotion of advanced models of access for patients to cardiology specialty care in Alberta.

Dr. Basic was born in Galt, Ontario. She completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University. She went on to complete Cardiology training at the University of Alberta and then returned to Toronto for a two year fellowship in Echocardiography at the Toronto Hospital, University of Toronto. During her fellowship, Dr. Basic developed a special interest in pregnancy and heart disease.

In 1993, Dr. Ronak Kanani earned his B.Sc. (Honours) in Physiology from the University of Alberta, Edmonton. He received his medical degree from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1996. He returned to the University of Alberta for his Cardiology Fellowship, and received his Cardiology Specialty Certification in 2002. Dr. Kanani then completed two years of Interventional Cardiology training at the Foothills Medical Centre, University of Calgary, followed by one year of training in Interventional and Vascular Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Dr. Peters was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta.  He obtained a B.Sc. in biology from Trinity Western University in 1991.  Following completion of his B.Sc, he attended pharmacy school at the University of Alberta before moving to Calgary for medical school.  He obtained his MD from the University of Calgary in 1999.  He subsequently completed specialty training in both Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Calgary.  In 2005 he went to the Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Ontario to complete a clinical/research fellowship in Echocardiography. He is active in the training of medical students, residents and fellows.  His current interests include critical care cardiology, echocardiography, valvular heart disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Dr. Westib was born in Bochum, Germany and attended medical school at the Ruhr-University of Bochum.  He then completed his Internal Medicine residency in Lippstadt and Bochum, Germany and his training in Cardiology in Recklinghausen, Germany.  Besides his commitment in services at all three hospital sides in Calgary and his practice of general adult Cardiology, Dr. Westib considers his work at the RACCTM cardiology clinic and at TotalCardiology Rehabilitation & Risk Reduction as an important part of his profession.

Before joining TotalCardiology & Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, he completed his training in doctorate of medicine (1989) and subspeciality in Cardiology (1995), post-doctoral fellowship in interventional cardiology and later clinical heart failure & devices.   He also received training in non-clinical, medical related fields such as hospital quality control & standardization.

 

Dr. Habibi is a Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Calgary, member of College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology & Fellow of  European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) .

Dr. Kazmi earned his medical degree from the University of Calgary in 2004. He subsequently trained in Internal Medicine at Queen's University and in Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, where he was Chief Resident.

He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine (2008) and in Cardiology (2010). Following his cardiology residency Dr. Kazmi specialized in multi-modality cardiac imaging, and completed a fellowship in Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac P.E.T. & Cardiac CT as well as a fellowship in Echocardiography, both at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Dr. Ilias Mylonas is a native Calgarian, having completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary in 1995. He attended medical school at Jagiellonian University, Collegium Medicum in Krakow, Poland graduating in 2004.  He subsequently completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and his cardiology training at the University of Saskatchewan, Royal University Hospital.  Dr.  Mylonas’  final training included a 2 year advanced subspecialty training fellowship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in nuclear cardiac imaging and cardiac computed tomography angiography.  In his spare time, Dr. Mylonas enjoys a physically active lifestyle as an avid weightlifter.

Dr. Mason earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a double major in biology and chemistry.  She earned the Senate Medal of Distinction and highest aggregate, as well as a National Science and Engineering Research Counsel Scholarship for graduate school.  She subsequently trained in the Pharmacology department at Dalhousie University earning a PhD in Single Cell Cardiac Electrophysiology.  During this training she was awarded the Isaac Walton Killam Memorial Doctorate Scholarship.  After completing her PhD she earned a Medical Degree from Dalhousie University.  She then moved to Calgary where she trained in Internal Medicine and in Cardiology at the University of Calgary.

 Dr. Champagne is originally from Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Québec. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa. He also holds a PhD in Experimental Medicine from McGill University. Following his medical residency training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Calgary, he completed a fellowship in Echocardiography at the Jewish General Hospital, an affiliate hospital of McGill University.  He practices medicine in English and French.

Dr. Stuart Hutchison

Stuart Hutchison MD, FRCPC, FACC, FAHA, FASE, FSCMR, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Departments of Cardiac Sciences, Internal Medicine, and Radiology at the University of Calgary, the Director of Echocardiography at Foothills Medical Center and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute Director of Echocardiography across the four the hospitals in Calgary, and is a member of the Stephenson Cardiovascular MRI Center.

He received his MDCM and completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology residencies at McGill University. He performed an echocardiography fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, followed with a vascular physiology / pharmacology research fellowship at the CardioVascular Research Institute of the University of California at San Francisco.

He was the Director of Echocardiography at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto for a decade before moving to Calgary, where he enjoys the practice of cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiac MRI.

He has written 80 articles, 15 book chapters, 72 abstracts, and 7 books with an 8th book in development, with interests in aortic diseases, pericardial diseases, complications of infarction, and multi-modality cardiac imaging.

He has received Provincial Excellence in Teaching awards (PAIRO and PAIRA) in two different Canadian provinces.

He ran 20 marathons, climbed in Alaska 15 times (summiting Denali three times by three different routes), climbed in the Himalaya 5 times including on K2 in winter and on Everest twice, summitted Cho Oyu (26, 906 feet) and climbed to 28,750 feet on Everest. He writes the High Altitude Medicine chapter for Michael Crawford’s textbook of cardiology.

He is married and has two sons, who teach him a lot.

Dr. Abdi Ali is originally from Somalia and moved to Vancouver to complete his BASc in Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia.  He then completed his MD at the University of British Columbia, before moving to Calgary where he completed his General Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship through the University of Calgary.

Outside of work Dr. Abdi Ali enjoys soccer, hiking and traveling.

Dr. Figura is originally from Slovakia where she obtained her medical degree from the Comenius University in Bratislava. She then obtained her Masters degree in Medical Sciences from the University of Calgary. 

Following her medical residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Alberta, Dr. Figura completed her Cardiology training at the University of Calgary.  She specialized in heart failure and completed a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Ilhan was born in Germany, but spent his childhood in Turkey.  He graduated from medical school at the Hacettepe University in Ankara Turkey in 2004, which is a great source of pride for him.  He completed his residency training in cardiology at the Dr. Siyami Ersek Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Research and Training Hospital in Istanbul, one of the leading cardiology centers in Turkey.  Dr. Ilhan and his family then moved to Calgary to complete his fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Calgary, Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta in 2016.  His clinic area of interest is diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

Dr. Ilhan joined TotalCardiology in 2017.
