Stuart Hutchison MD, FRCPC, FACC, FAHA, FASE, FSCMR, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Departments of Cardiac Sciences, Internal Medicine, and Radiology at the University of Calgary, the Director of Echocardiography at Foothills Medical Center and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute Director of Echocardiography across the four the hospitals in Calgary, and is a member of the Stephenson Cardiovascular MRI Center.
He received his MDCM and completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology residencies at McGill University. He performed an echocardiography fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, followed with a vascular physiology / pharmacology research fellowship at the CardioVascular Research Institute of the University of California at San Francisco.
He was the Director of Echocardiography at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto for a decade before moving to Calgary, where he enjoys the practice of cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiac MRI.
He has written 80 articles, 15 book chapters, 72 abstracts, and 7 books with an 8th book in development, with interests in aortic diseases, pericardial diseases, complications of infarction, and multi-modality cardiac imaging.
He has received Provincial Excellence in Teaching awards (PAIRO and PAIRA) in two different Canadian provinces.
He ran 20 marathons, climbed in Alaska 15 times (summiting Denali three times by three different routes), climbed in the Himalaya 5 times including on K2 in winter and on Everest twice, summitted Cho Oyu (26, 906 feet) and climbed to 28,750 feet on Everest. He writes the High Altitude Medicine chapter for Michael Crawford’s textbook of cardiology.
He is married and has two sons, who teach him a lot.
